THIS STUDENT IS A FULL-TIME PROFESSIONAL COUNSELOR
Hope you guys are having a wonderful time. JUST HAD to tell you that yesterday a woman in our class (a mature believer) told me that your dad’s study is “probably the best” Bible study she has ever participated in Sojourners
I don’t know about you, but once again as we near the end of another WONDERFUL Bible Study, my heart is saddened. We are near “the finish line” in our study, so I urge you to put forth the same diligence in studying this last chapter on Perseverance that you have demonstrated in the former chapters. As well, the section on Perspective, pages 195-197, might well be my favorite part of this book. I began our study with this brief -- but incredibly profound -- section, and ironically our last questions are developed from these pages.
In my opinion… within the first 2 paragraphs of page 195, Pastor Ted has written one of the best descriptions of the Christian Worldview that I have seen. He quotes William Jay, a contemporary of Charles Haddon Spurgeon. Jay writes:
“We are strangers and pilgrims upon the earth. We resemble the Jews in the wilderness: we are not in Egypt, and we are not in Canaan, but journeying from one to the other. We are delivered from our natural state, but before we can enter glory, ‘we have this desert world to pass, a dangerous and tiresome place.’ And as the Jews were not left to themselves, but had a conductor, so have we -- ‘This God is our God forever and ever; He will be our guide even unto death.”
(Remember Lauren Chandler’s Study on the book of Numbers, With Us in the Wilderness? That previous study gave us a clear image that what Jay has stated is indeed true!)
On page 196, Pastor Ted uses the words of William Jay to remind us that we are not so different from the Israelites.
“We are not in Egypt... We are not in Canaan… We have this desert world to pass, a dangerous and tiresome place.”
Thankfully, however, Pastor Ted does not leave us there! He closes his book with words of encouragement: “God Himself is our constant companion. Scripture is full of assurances about the full and sufficient source He is for all our needs in this ‘wilderness experience’. (Phil 4:19)
How is ‘your journey’ going this week? (We really aren’t so different from the Israelites. Right?)
Looking forward to seeing all of you on Sunday, as we finish the study of Spiritual Boot Camp with the author himself!
Hope you guys are having a wonderful time. JUST HAD to tell you that yesterday a woman in our class (a mature believer) told me that. your dad’s study. is “probably the best” Bible study. she has ever participated in.
